As a new parent, you probably have so many questions about baby formula. One of the biggest questions most often asked by parents about formula is; what are the types of formula are safe for my baby to use? Well, there are many types of formulas on the market, and finding the right one for your baby should not be that difficult.

However, when you do decide on one particular formula, it is best to stick to it, even if you have the urge to switch. At the first sign of gas, spitting up, or colic most parents think it is diet related. Most of the time, it is usually just your little one’s tummy still trying to mature and regulate itself.

Five of the most commonly used formulas for babies in their first stages of life are cow’s-milk- based formula, lactose-free, soy-based, extensively hydrolyzed formula, and formula for premature and low-birth-weight babies.

Cow’s-Milk Based

You will find that most milk on the market today has cow’s milk for the main ingredient. The good news about the milk is that it has been altered so that it is easier for your little one to digest. You baby will not be able to drink regular whole milk until after their 1-year old birthday. Your pediatrician will help you decide the right time.

Lactose-free

There are some cases were babies just cannot handle the sugar that is naturally found in milk. It is rare but it does happen from time to time. In instances such as this, your child’s doctor will recommend an alternative formula that replaces the sugar with corn syrup or a different type sugar.

Soy-based

Soy milk is actually great for little ones with allergic reactions to the protein in cow’s milk. Most babies who are allergic to protein in cow’s milk might have mild rectal bleeding at bowel movement times. The formula is made with plant protein and quite easy to digest. Parents who are vegans also might prefer for their little one to drink soy-based formula as well.

Extensively hydrolyzed formula

The protein is broken down in extensively hydrolyzed formula so that it is easy for the baby to digest. Most formulas have larger protein molecules that can be harsh on a little one’s tummy. If your child has several types of allergies, or a difficult time absorbing nutrients, ask your doctor about this type formula. It is also good for babies who suffer with common skin conditions such as eczema.

Preemie and Low-Birth Formula

These formulas have been designed specifically for babies who were born early and underweight. The formula contain more protein and calories which are easy to absorb and has fat called medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) in it. It is most likely that before your little one lives the hospital your doctor will talk to you about this type of formula. If not be sure to ask about formula that is right for your child if they were born underweight or as a preemie.

New formulas come out on the market every day to help parents give their children a good source of nutrition. More formulas now are being geared toward children who have allergies, or born with different types of medical conditions. Be sure to ask your pediatrician to help you make the right choice for your little one.

Caring for Baby’s Uncircumcised Penis

Doctor

Not all parents will want their young baby boys circumcised. So, for those parents who make this decision based on their own personal reasons, it is important to know how to properly care for the area. During the first several years your son’s foreskin will separate from the tip of the penis.

There have been cases where the foreskins separate soon after birth or even before birth, but this is highly rare. When it does happen, the foreskin will be able to slide back from the tip of the penis, which is referred to as foreskin retraction.
