Diaper Rash Causes

Irritation due to constant wetting and wiping dry the skin as well as exposure to different environmental substances will cause the skin to breakdown. Small children will develop redness, infections, small bumps and roughness spots on the bottom. The most common irritants are from different types of soaps, sitting in urine or stool to long, detergents with perfumes, or products containing alcohol. The first year of life parents can expect for their baby’s bottom to be quite sensitive, and there will need to be extra protection for it.

Diaper Rash Occurrence

There is no specific time that can be pinpointed to when the diaper rash will occur. However, there are times such as when a baby is trying new foods, teething, or have been exposed to a soiled diaper too long that you will notice this problem. When small babies are teething alkaline is most likely to produce and be present in the urine; this will lead to breakdown and irritation. If a child is allergic to a new food, they might also have a problem with irritation. There is no doubt if you leave a child too long in a soiled diaper, there are negative consequences for the little one. Many times that bottom will become immediately red and rash will develop.

Treating Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is definitely treatable, it is just unfortunate for a little baby to have to go through the pain and irritation of the discomfort.

Cleaning

However, if the little one does develop a rash there are things that can be done. Rinse the bottom with warm water, make sure the water is not too hot. Pat the bottom dry. Do not wipe,or use baby wipes with perfume or alcohol. Avoid using any type of soap.

Creams

Some baby bottoms will require a mild bottom cream. Find a product that has natural ingredients. A rash cream that has Vitamin E is really good. Do not use powders with cornstarch in it. These powders generally cause yeast, and can cause breathing problems in babies.

Natural products

Use all natural products if something has to be used to clean the bottom. Allow the baby to lay bare bottom when home resting, it will allow the bottom time to heal. Remove disposable or cloth diapers to allow airing out. The best thing that you can do for your baby is to prevent the rash in the first place. To do this keep the baby changed frequently. At the first sign of a wet diaper it is important to change it.

Most babies have between 12-15 diaper changes a day. As the baby grows the number willdecrease. Keep the baby properly cleaned with a warm cloth after each change. Avoid diaper creams which can block air from circulating. If an ointment or cream is used, be sure to check and read the labels thoroughly. It is best not to use those with a petroleum base. A great alternative is coconut or vitamin E cream.
